María José Gallardo Nelson

María José Gallardo is a biochemist from the University of Chile. He completed the undergraduate thesis in the Faculty of Sciences of the same University. The thesis was oriented in microbiology and molecular biology studying specifically the mechanisms of bacterial communication. In 2007 he began his postgraduate studies at the University of Chile, where he worked on the study of biological macromolecules, with a focus on biophysics of proteins involved in bacterial communication mechanisms. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Optical Trapping and Microscopy Laboratory of the Center for Optics and Photonics (CEFOP) of the University of Concepción between 2011 and 2018. She currently works at Lab4U, a scientific education company whose objective is to democratize access to science in Latin America. She is also a teacher of the courses “Scientific Culture: Outreach and Education” and “Scientific Culture Workshop” at the University of Chile.

Daniela Seelenfreund

Daniela Seelenfreund is a graduate in Biochemistry from the Universidad de Chile and obtained her PhD at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. She teaches molecular biology at the Facultad de Ciencias Químicas y Farmacéuticas, Universidad de Chile since 1989. From 1990 to 1997 she collaborated with Luz María Pérez’ group on the response of Citrus limon against fungal pathogens. From 2004 to 2010 she worked with Pilar Durruty on the genetics of diabetes complications, particularly on polymorphisms associated to diabetic nephropathy. Currently, she is involved in a research line that uses genetic tools to understand past human history. In particular, the settlement of the Pacific by tracking the Austronesian expansion using paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) as a proxy of human movement. She participated in the development of a new course on communication and outreach for undergraduate biochemistry students. She coordinates the Master’s program in Biochemistry and was Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Facultad de Ciencias Químicas y Farmacéuticas, Universidad de Chile.
