Hermann Niemeyer conferences CLICK TO DISPLAY

The board (1999-2000) of the Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile (SBBMCh) chaired by Dr. Juan Carlos Slebe proposed to carry out activities aimed at stimulating and strengthening the rapprochement between its partners and researchers in Latin America and Spain, promoting, with Dr. Ricardo Wolosiuk in Argentina and Dr. Joan Guinovart in Spain, Presidents of the Argentine Societies for Biochemical Research and Molecular Biology (SAIB) and the Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM), holding joint meetings. Thus, in 2000 the first Ibero-American meeting of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology was held in Viña del Mar, Chile. On that occasion, the Annual Meetings of the SBBMCh, the SAIB and the Society of Cell Biology of Chile were held together, with the important and massive participation of the SEBBM.

As a result of these relations, the commitment to a reciprocal exchange of speakers invited to the respective national annual meetings arose, with the agreement between the respective directives that the SEBBM provides for aConference called Hermann Niemeyerand one Conference called Luis Leloir, during its Annual Meeting, which will be dictated by a Chilean researcher and an Argentine researcher, respectively. Reciprocally, our Society arranges at its Annual Meeting aConference called Severo Ochoa and the SAIB one Conference called Alberto Sols, each of which will be dictated by a Spanish researcher. The name of the conferences was to pay tribute to these excellent researchers who were masters of Ibero-American biochemists.

Osvaldo Cori conferences CLICK TO DISPLAY

The Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile annually pays tribute to the memory of outstanding researcher Osvaldo Cori Moully through a conference that bears his name. An idea of the impact of Cori's work for the development of Biochemistry in Chile is provided by his disciple Carlos George-Nascimento in Archives of Experimental Biology and Medicine 21 (1), 1988, volume in which the then Society of Biochemistry of Chile pays tribute to the memory of Professor Dr. Osvaldo Cori Moully, teacher and trainer of a number of the country's biochemists and prominent founding member of our Society. Says George-Nascimento "Medicine in Chile, in those years, was the natural way to reach scientific research. The fact that medicine was the only path available to students with a penchant for research leads Osvaldo to promote what was one of his greatest achievements as a university student: the creation of the Biochemistry career. It is no exaggeration to say that the new generations of biochemists in Chile owe their status to the visionary task of Dr. Cori."

In fact, in 1957 Osvaldo Cori founded the first career of Biochemistry in the country and Latin America together with Luis Cerutti and César Leighton, which was a milestone in the process of professionalization of the scientist by offering a university career through which researchers would be trained. From that place Cori trained several generations of researchers, with the same standard of excellence that he adopted after his time in the laboratories of Fritz Lippman at Harvard and Severo Ochoa in New York. Cori fostered, both in the career of Biochemistry and in his laboratory, a work with international impact, since he considered that the quality of the scientist was also measured by the ability to communicate his discoveries.

Awards

Medals Hermann Niemeyer CLICK TO DISPLAY

Being President Dr. Octavio Monasterio, to pay a posthumous tribute to Dr. Hermann Niemeyer, the society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile publishes a special issue of the journal of biology and experimental medicine files and instituted the annual award medal Hermann Niemeyer. The Dr. Tito Ureta (President), Dr. Jorge Allende, Dr. Luis Izquierdo and Dr. Victoria Guixé integrated the editor Committee of this book.

The launching ceremony was held on January 14, 1993 at the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Chile and the speech was conducted by Dr. Jorge Allende.

Also established the Prize medal Hermann Niemeyer surrendered annually to an outstanding student of Ph.d. programs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and other related areas.

The first medal Hermann Niemeyer was delivered at the book launch ceremony Hermann Niemeyer and science in Chile and the Committee responsible for selecting the winner was composed of DRS. M. Krauskopf, J. Allende, Hidalgo C., M. Sapag and R. Vicuña.

In 2012 the Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile established the Dr. Tito Ureta Award, as a way to recognize the great scientific and academic work of this outstanding partner. The award recognizes scientific excellence in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology, and aims to honor those who have achieved distinguished achievements in this area and have made outstanding contributions in terms of leadership, teaching and dedication to society.

To measure the legacy of this great scientist and know something of his vast career, we must first know something of his history. Tito was from Iquiqueño and that fact reminded him permanently and especially every May 21, when he announced that he would not go to the laboratory because he had to dress as a sailor. Tito received his medical-surgeon degree in 1963 and later traveled to the United States to Rockefeller University, thanks to a Fogarty scholarship, to begin a post-doctoral stay in the laboratory of Fritz Lipmann, a giant of Biochemistry laureate in 1953 with the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

In Titus' own words, "The fascination with Biochemistry was definitely reinforced by becoming part of the laboratory of Hermann Niemeyer, whose overwhelming personality and qualities as a scholar of science and his ability and taste for conducting experiments, managed to excite several interested young people." That same fascination managed to awaken Titus in his disciples. In 1957 he began his contractual relationship with the University of Chile with a position of student assistant, a university to which he served for more than 50 years and which according to his words only demanded the vow of poverty, but not that of obedience, not least that of chastity. The scientific legacy of Titus is vast and is related on the one hand to hexokinases, a lifelong passion, begun in Burgundy 1470 and which led him to venture, through comparative biochemistry, into molecular evolution. According to many evolutionists Tito is chile's first molecular biologist. His book "Molecular Strategies of Evolution: Origin and Evolution of Proteins and Enzymes", is a reference in the field. He also made notable contributions regarding the role of isoenzymes in metabolism, the work being published in Current Topics in Cellular Regulation, one of his most cited articles, even in texts of Biochemistry (Stryer).

But Titus was also a great conversationalist, possessor of an enviable culture. Lover of history in general, the history of Biochemistry in particular and music. He is the author of the books "On the Razor's Edge of Occam, Reductionist Reflections on Some Problems of the Human" and of "Fragments of a Manual for the Perplexed of the 21st Century. Intersections between Science and the Eternal Questions of the Human".

He was president of the Society of Biology of Chile (1977-1978), of the Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile (1983-1984), in addition to participating in several other societies both in Europe and in the United States. He was editor of the journal Archives of Experimental Biology and Medicine (today Biological Research) and member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Chile since 1988. At the University of Chile, he was Director of the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Sciences, member of the Higher Commission for Academic Evaluation, which he chaired for four years and Director of the Department of Scientific Research and Artistic Creation. He also participated in the Special Commission of the University Senate and later, as a cross-sectional senator of the University Senate.

Until his death in 2012, he served as a full professor of the Faculties of Sciences, Physical sciences and Mathematics and Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Chile.

Awards Fermelo-SBBMCh CLICK TO DISPLAY

Them awards Fermelo-SBBMCh were born in the year 2007 in talks between the company Fermelo S.A., being its director the Mr Luciano Fernández and the directive of the SBBMCH of the year 2007. They are an annual award that the SBBMCH best free oral communication, the best free communication panel and the best work of incorporation. These awards are given to exhibitors at the Congress of the SBBMCh and are intended to give support to researchers for merits in their work and who have made an excellent presentation, with the condition that delivered moneys are intended to assist other congresses or scientific events.
