José N. Onuchic is a Brazilian and American physicist whose research is focused on developing theoretical and computational methods for molecular Biophysics, chemical reactions in condensed matter and gene networks. His work, exposed through more than 200 publications, introduced the concept of energy funnel of protein folding and the phenomenon of Tunneling protein with electron transfer processes. His recent research also focuses on stochastic gene networks in bacteria and cancer effects, as well as well as reveal the principles of folding of human chromosomes. Dr José N. Onuchic has been recipient of several awards, including the prize International Centre for Theoretical Physics in honor to Werner Heisenberg in 1989, the Einstein of the Academy of Sciences of China in 2011 faculty and the Diaspora Award of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of development, industry and foreign trade of Brazil in 2014, as well as being elected member of the National Academy of Sciences of USA, Academy of Sciences and arts of the United STATES, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the society of Biophysics.
