How to lead effectively: skills for managing scientists
(Leadership workshop)

Dr. Anna Goldstein and Dr. Ben Thuronyi
(Harvard University)

This full-day workshop will focus on the critical interpersonal aspects of leading a group of scientists, integrating techniques for communication, feedback, conflict resolution, and negotiation. It’s designed to complement the SLAM seminar series by providing highly interactive, participatory experiences. You’ll get hands-on practice with the relationship skills that are key to being a great group leader. You’ll be better equipped to work with challenging people and situations. Even more importantly, you’ll learn how to get the most out of your future experiences and use them to become a better leader and manager over time.

Anna Goldstein is a postdoctoral research fellow in Science, Technology and Public Policy program at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School. Her research focuses on R&D funding and management strategies to advance clean energy technology. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 2014. While at Berkeley, she was the founder and first organizing chair of the SLAM seminar series.

Ben Thuronyi is a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University in the Liu group, where he is developing directed evolution methods to support precision genome editing. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 2015. He was a founding member of SLAM and served as organizing committee chair in its second year.

Between them, Ben and Anna have facilitated dozens of science leadership and management seminars and participated in hundreds of hours of related workshops and training.
