Quedan cordialmente invitados a participar este viernes 27 de mayo a las 13.00 horas, del seminario presentado por el investigador invitado  Dr. Pascal Raux, quien actualmente ejecuta su postdoctorado  en la facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, Viña del Mar. En esta  ocasión el Dr. Raux nos expondrá su trabajo titulado Mixing liquids with grains: from cohesion to erosion.”

El seminario se dictará en la sala de conferencias (tercer piso block B) del Departamento de física de la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, ubicado en Av.Ecuador  #3493, Estación central, Santiago.

A continuación se adjunta un resumen del seminario.

During this presentation, I will discuss three problems illustrating the diversity of possible liquid-grain interactions.
– When we pour liquid on a granular pile, it can either soak it or stay at its surface depending on the wetting properties. We present an experimental study of this phenomenon and develop a model to explain the value of the critical angle at which this transition occurs.
– If we deposit a drop on hydrophobic grains, the interface captures the grains and a liquid marble is formed. Due to their mobility, these drops easily roll away, producing an erosion of the pile. I will present our results on the amount of grains taken away by the drop.
– In the opposite case, adding liquid highly increases the cohesion of a wetted granular material, due to the creation of capillary bridges. From the paste obtained by mixing a large amount of water to glass beads, we cast a compact beam. We study its rupture under its own weight, then deduce the cohesive strength, which increases with water content. This behavior diverges from what is expected from individual capillary bridges, suggesting a role of the liquid repartition in the granular medium.
