PEW Postdoctoral Scholarships
Pew supports postdoctoral training in the U.S. and the creation of new laboratories in Latin America
Pew's Latin American Fellowship Program in the Field of Biomedical Sciences provides support over two years of postdoctoral training in leading laboratories in the United States. Scholars gain opportunities to develop their careers, collaborate with top researchers in the U.S. and exchange knowledge with hundreds of Pew-backed scientists. In addition, fellows receive funding to help them establish their own laboratories in Latin America
Details for the 2021 scholarship award
- In 2021, Pew will select ten Latin American fellows. Scholarships will begin to govern in August 2021.
- Pew will award $30,000 per year for two years of postdoctoral work at a sponsoring lab in the U.S. This remuneration complements the salary of the fellow by the sponsoring laboratory.
- Participants who return to Latin America and establish independent laboratories will receive an additional $70,000 subsidy from Pew to purchase equipment and supplies.
Requirements
- Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree by February 1, 2021, but not before June 8, 2016. Applicants must not have begun receiving postdoctoral training in the U.S. by January 1, 2020.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained their academic degrees in latin American institutions. Applicants may have earned their academic degrees at universities outside Latin America, but preferably not in the U.S.
- Before submitting their application, applicants must confirm a postdoctoral job in the lab of a principal investigator (sponsor) in the U.S. The sponsor may not be the same person who advised or directed the applicant during his/her training in the doctoral programme.
- Applicants must submit a written statement stating their express intention to return to Latin America.
Application
- To apply, stakeholders must first get the commitment of a postdoctoral job in a sponsoring lab. Scientists who need help identifying a sponsoring laboratory are invited to contact a member of the regional committee and seek advice. They can also contact the Pew program office at fellowsapp@pewtrusts.org.
- Once the sponsor is obtained, applicants must send an email to Pew, fellowsapp@pewtrusts.org, to request access to the online application platform, which will be available on June 8, 2020.
- The application deadline is August 26, 2020.
