Alberto R. Kornblihtt was born in 1954 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Graduated as biologist (1977) at the Faculty of exact sciences and natural (FCEN) of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and obtained the title of Doctor in Chemistry (major in biochemistry) at the Campomar Foundation (1980) directed by Héctor Torres. He did a postdoctoral fellow (1981-1984) at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology in Oxford University, directed by Tito Baralle, where cloned human fibronectin gene and discovered its alternative splicing. Is Professor holder plenary in the Department of Physiology, biology Molecular and cell of the faculty, researcher Superior of the CONICET and Director of the Institute of Physiology, biology Molecular and Neuroscience (IFIBYNE-UBA-CONICET). Since 2002 it is International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). He was awarded the Guggenheim (1991) grant, the Platinum Konex (2003) award, a special subsidy/grant from Antorchas Foundation (2000-2008), the Medal of bicentenary (2010) and the trajectory Houssay Prize in chemistry, biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2010). He is a member of scientific boards of research institutes in South Africa and Uruguay, and was part of the National Ethics Committee on Science and technology of Argentina (CECTE). He directed 17 doctoral theses, organized 5 international scientific meetings, and will be co-organizer of the meeting in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on processing of RNA in 2017, 2019 and 2021. Was member of the Board of Reviewing Editors of the journal Science (2010-2015). He is Editor in Chief of the journal Transcription, Member of the Board of the FASEB Journal, and was the President of the Argentina society for research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SAIB) in the period 2010-2011. In 2011 received the Honorable mention Domingo Faustino Sarmiento of the Senate, the award profile with the intelligence, the mention of life masters of the CETERA, researcher of the nation Argentina 2010 award, granted by the Presidency of the nation, and was elected (foreign associate) member of the National Academy of Sciences of USA. In 2012 has received the award TWAS in Sciences Medical awarded by the Academy of Sciences for the world in development, has been elected member of the EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) and academic of the Academy national of Sciences of Argentina. In 2013 was awarded the Konex awards of Platinum on molecular biology and shiny as scientific highlight of the Decade 2003-2013, shared with the physicist Juan Martín Maldacena, and incorporated into the National Academy of Sciences, natural and physical.
