Newsletter IV Julio 2016

In the Alma Ata Hall of MINSAL, on July 13, was the first workshop ACCDiS-MINSAL entitled "La to the action in Cancer Research". The day that lasted a whole afternoon, was organized by the Centre for advanced chronic diseases in coordination with the Ministry of health, from the invitation made to the Center by Dr. Andrea Guerrero, Adviser to the Cabinet of Ms. Minister of health, in order to know the latest information about cancer in Chile, for the elaboration of the National Plan for Cancer.
On this occasion were more than 40 professionals of the technical units of the Ministry who are currently participating in the development of the Plan.
In the first part of the workshop, described a vision general of the Centre, the Director of ACCDiS, Dr. Sergio Lavandero. Followed by the presentation of the main results of population-based investigations, which may be of interest at the time of generating public policies in the area of prevention of certain major cancers in Chile, carried out by the Deputy Director of ACCDiS and Director of the cohort of the Maule-MAUCO, Dr. Catterina Ferreccio and his team of researchers peace Cook, Johanna Acevedo and Vanessa Van de Wyngard.

Ferreccio Krueger showed the population test in screening of cervical cancer, which uses the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) virus DNA in comparison with the PAP. Also gave to know the results of the examination of HPV when is performs an autotoma for the detection early of injuries. With this evidence, Dr. Ferreccio proposed to the Ministry the incorporation of new molecular methods based on HPV, to improve the effectiveness of the national screening program.
On this occasion Ferreccio also presented the results of the investigation of the inflammatory markers: C-reactive protein and interleukin 8, which are at levels higher in people carriers of gallbladder cancer. In addition, reported an investigation on these markers in association with the Hospital Sótero del Río, which 2000 patients in the next two years, results that will allow select individuals with higher priority to undergo gallbladder. Another issue tackled were the conclusions of studies on exposure to aflatoxin in Chile and its direct relationship with this cancer, proposing to MINSAL the beginning of research into this toxin in the country, which offered the collaboration of MAUCO.

The Cook peace researcher, noted that "the measures implemented at the national level to detect gastric cancer do not allow select properly the population at risk, so the diagnosis is made in very advanced stages". Because of this, a study will take place at the Hospital Sótero del Río, in 2000 patients from the waiting list for endoscopy, who will apply them serological markers, in order to assess their effectiveness in our population, being able to make a recommendation for the prioritization of the list

ACE of waiting.
The researcher Johanna Acevedo, referred to the increased risk of bladder and lung cancers in the population exposed to arsenic in the drinking water of the region between 1958 and 1970. Recommendation with respect to this issue is to "evaluate the feasibility of initiating a screening for lung cancer in the population that has been highly exposed to arsenic in the childhood".
In the second part of the workshop, Dr. Alejandro Corvalán, Principal investigator ACCDiS, unveiled the main research topics making Center in cancer area. In addition, he exhibited on the liquid biopsy for detention and monitoring of gastric cancer. Which, in the words of Dr. Corvalán "is a characteristic of tumor for diagnostic marker and monitoring of cancer".
Finally, Dr. Juan Carlos Roa, researcher associate ACCDiS, referred to the positive role of biobanks in research of cancer, where he presented their projects on the regulation of biobanks in the country and the creation of a "national network of biobanks for Chile", which means according to Dr. Roa in "support for national research".
Made the end of the day the DRA. Guerrero, who thanked the layout of ACCDiS and its researchers for the development of the activity, looking forward to that in the future other instances like this will generate. To its time, the Ms. read Derio of the Department of Cancer MINSAL catalogued the workshop as of "excellent level" by what gave them "thanks by the contribution, especially to the DRA. Ferreccio, by his great contribution in the research of the cancer and the contribution to the Ministry".
The development of this first workshop left open invitation for future collaborations between ACCDiS and MINSAL, resulting in a major step towards the goal of ACCDiS of influence through their results in developing public policy in health.

Group of epidemiology-Cardiovascular ACCDiS: an example of Basica-clinica integration
Every Monday of the year meets the Group of epidemiology-Cardiovascular ACCDiS, consisting of 12 basic and clinical researchers in the cardiovascular area of the Centre between PIs, researchers partners and collaborators.
As indicated by Dr. Maria Paz Ocaranza, Coordinator of the group, "aims to explore how to take advantage of the opportunities afforded the cohort of the Maule-MAUCO, to extrapolate measurements Epidemiologico-cardiovascular type, which allows the generation of new research projects".

A first successful initiative born of this group of researchers is the echocardiographic evaluation being carried out in MAUCO in over a hundred adults with cardiovascular risk factors. As mentioned the Ocaranza DRA. "this is a project that was not in the initial proposal of MAUCO, which arises from this group and manages grant funding, transforming it into a contribution to studies already carried out in Molina". The study is being developed by the doctors Luigi Gabrielli and Claudia Bambs, researchers Asociados de ACCDiS, and aims to investigate possible damage to the heart before they gatillen cardiovascular diseases.
ACCDiS seminars
Interesting topics were exposed in the ACCDiS seminars in June and July
During the months of June and July of this year, ACCDiS organized 4 seminars, with the exhibition of outstanding researchers from national institutions.

June 02 was held the 6th seminar ACCDiS 2016 with the exposure of the Dr. Soledad bun entitled"Surface nanostructured for application in electrochemical biosensors and plasmonicos”.
Subsequently the 16 of June, the Dr. Miguel Allende", director of the Centre for regulation of the genome (CRG), spoke about the"Neural regeneration in zebrafish” .
On Thursday, June 30, the Dr. William Diaz-araya"spoke about the"Fibroblasts: Cells sentinels in the cardiac tissue”
Finally, on 14 July, the Dr. Veronica Palm "referred to the"Development of therapeutic strategies angiogenic using stem cells from umbilical cord mesenchymal“.
The nine seminars made by ACCDiS this 2016 already have participated more than 250 people, including scientists, students and the public in general.
