Call for Applications: Director of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona)

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) is a world-class research centre devoted to understanding fundamental questions about human health and disease (http://www.irbbarcelona.org/). It was founded in October 2005 by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona. It hosts 25 research groups with over 400 scientists, students, technical and support staff. The Institute’s missions include conducting multidisciplinary research of excellence at the interface between biology, chemistry, biophysics, and big-data science.

Prof. Joan J. Guinovart, Director of IRB Barcelona since its founding, plans to step down from this position early in 2018. IRB Barcelona is therefore seeking to appoint a new Director.

The Director will be expected to provide inspirational scientific leadership to the Institute and be responsible for its ongoing strategic development, ensuring that its programmes and technical facilities remain at the forefront of biomedical research and that discoveries made at IRB Barcelona are translated into benefits for society. She or he will be an exceptionally accomplished and ambitious scientist with an outstanding international research management profile. The Director will set the example and drive the values and ethos of the Institute.

IRB Barcelona belongs to CERCA, the network of public research centres in Catalonia, Spain (http://www.cerca.cat). IRB Barcelona and five other CERCA units form the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (www.bist.eu).

How to apply

Applicants should send a CV and a cover letter by e-mail to the Director of CERCA at applications@cerca.cat. Closing date: 30 June, 2017.

Selection process

CERCA is delegated to manage the entire selection process. Suitable candidates will be identified by an ad hoc Commission formed by members of IRB Barcelona’s External Advisory Board (EAB). This Commission will draw up a short list of candidates who will be invited to visit IRB Barcelona for interview. It will then make a final recommendation regarding the most suitable candidate to the Board of Trustees, which will be responsible for the final appointment.
