Carlos Rivera PhD student receives medal Hermann Niemeyer
Congratulations Hermann Niemeyer Medal 2018!This was the subject of the email that Carlos Rivera received last June 7th and that has him more than happy. As a good student of our PhD, he knows how important it is to be recognized by the Society of Biochemistry, but for him, he has a special nuance:
"It is an honor to receive the Hemann Niemeyer Medal, because he is a scientist who all biochemist must admire: pioneered the development of biochemistry in Chile and also played a very important role in the development of national doctoral programs, as well as in the defense of university activity during military rule. He trained large biochemists from Chile. It's really an honor to be awarded his name."
This recognition is given to a student chosen from all the doctoral programs in the country in the areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology,It stands out for its academic excellence and scientific career. The basis states "that it is considered favourable that it has publications derived from its thesis work, or has presented preliminary results at national or international scientific meetings".
Carlos Rivera studied biochemistry at the University of Chile and after completing a Master's degree in Biochemistry from the same study house - plus a brief time working at the Science and Life Foundation - he decided to apply to the Doctorate of Biological Sciences, mentioning Cell Biology.
His research does it focusin Biochemical basis of epigenetics, studying the mechanisms of Association of chromatin protein CoREST,that is, how they interact with DNA. His tutor is Dr. María Estela Andres, who sponsored Carlos' nomination. "It was very emotional, because she also received the Hermann Niemeyer Medal when she was a student," she says.
Carlos is very proud of the line of research he is developing, as it is a new topic at the Faculty and although this represents generating new networks and opening himself up to other topics, he has received a lot of support. His research will even take him in October to an internship at Harvard Medical School, where he will work at theLaboratory of Dr. Jeannie T. Lee.
Already on the way back in Santiago, Charles will be able to sit down and share those he considers great scientists in theSociety of Biochemistry, as the award gives you the status of student member of the Society.
Also will participate with a talk on the25-28 September society Congressin Iquique, in whose closing ceremony will receive recognition.
"I'm going to assimilate this award when you're there", enthusiastic account.
