DOCTOR MARTIN MONTECINO IS ELECTED NEW PRESIDENT OF THE CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE FONDECYT SCIENCE

As of February 3, 2017, the Dr. Martin Montecino takes over the position of president of The Higher Council of Science of Fondecyt, an agency whose main mission is to allocate resources for research in basic science.

Martin Montecino He holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, with a mention in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Massachusetts. Currently, he serves as full professor and director of the Center for Biomedical Research of the Faculty of Medicine of Andrés Bello University, is deputy director of the Fondap Center for Genome Regulation and director of the Doctoral Program in Biosciences UNAB Moleculars.

Bruno Defilippi He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis and a degree in Agronomy from the University of Chile. Dr. Defilippi is postharvest coordinator at the Agricultural Research Institute, INIA, La Platina center and full-day academic of the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of the University of Chile. Her appointment is on January 20, 2017, replacing Dr. Carmen Gallo.

Cecilia Albala he is a surgeon and public health specialist at the University of Chile, and holds postgraduate studies in geriatric epidemiology at the University of Padua and chronic diseases at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since 1979, Dr. Albala has been an academic at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology, INTA, where she is a full professor. His appointment is from February 2, 2017, replacing Dr. María Elena Santolaya.

Pablo Richter holds an exact science scan with a mention in Chemistry. He completed his undergraduate and doctoral studies at the University of Chile and his postdoctoral studies at the University of Córdoba de España and later at Oklahoma State University in the United States. He is a full professor at the University of Chile and director of the Postgraduate Department of the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of this house of studies. His appointment is on February 2, 2017, replacing Dr. Arturo Squella.

Researchers in the position of directors perform this work exclusively in a personal capacity and do not act as representatives of public or private institutions that develop or promote scientific or technological research. To be elected they must have a qualification that places them "in plans of eminence and distinction for their contributions in the field of research" and are appointed by means of proposals to the President of the Republic.

One of the main functions of the Higher Councils is to allocate resources for research in basic science or technological development and to establish specific research programmes. In assessing the projects that apply for these funds, the Councils are advised by Study Groups in the different areas of knowledge.
